Heading out into nature is always a fun adventure. If you’re new to hiking and want to explore fresh trails, it’s good to know what gear to have with you. There are many essential pieces of gear to pack for your hiking trip, but here are some we feel are the most important.

A Sturdy Backpack

No hiker should hit the trails without a reliable backpack. Not only does a good hiking backpack hold the rest of your gear, but they’re also typically made from waterproof material and have sturdy frames that prove invaluable if things go south. You can choose a frameless backpack for short journeys, but we recommend a framed pack with an increased weight limit.

Appropriate Clothing and Shoes

Shorts and sandals might be good for a walk along Miami beach, but they may not be the best choice for an intense hike through the Sierra Nevada mountains. It’s a good idea to get some sturdy hiking boots to help protect your feet and ankles.

When going through forests, we also recommend some high-visibility clothing in bright yellow or orange. High visibility clothing makes it easy for people to spot you and reduces the chances of getting lost for an extended period.

Orientation Supplies

Every hiker, whether beginner or veteran, should carry a compass. Knowing how to read a compass enables you to find your bearings and makes exploration a more accessible and exciting experience. When hiking off the beaten path, it’s also a good idea to pick up a map of the area from a local park or ranger station.

Food and Water

Dehydration is one of the biggest dangers for those in the wilderness, so the essential gear to pack on your hiking trip is proper water and food supply. High protein snacks like nuts are good for keeping up your energy. However, we recommend avoiding salted nuts, leading to further dehydration.
