If you’ve never heard of essential oils before then here is your sign – Essential oils are great for your spiritual and mental health. Using essential oils can bring you so many different benefits that add to your life in a positive way. You can use them in numerous ways for numerous things and the best thing is they are completely natural. From using them to ease your pain or even just to make your home smell nice, they really are essential. To help you, we’ve spoken to numerous people and gathered their opinions into this article so that you know which essential oil to choose for your mind and body.

Why essential oils?

The best way to think about mental health and essential oils is to think of the oils as three groups: uppers, downers, grounders.

Uppers are just that – uplifting. They raise mood and energy which is great for depression, low mood and general tiredness. However, they’re not always appropriate if you also suffer for anxiety, or you’re approaching or in burnout.

Downers are your relaxants. They’re good for anxiety, restlessness, and calming down to go to sleep. Since they do chill you out, they’re not always good for using at work.

Grounders are good for essentially establishing a baseline. They’re often ones used to improve the immune system, and since stress plays havoc with your immune system, grounders are seriously important for long-term health. Grounders basically slow down your mind without putting it in rest mode, so they’re normally recommended for anxiety/ADHD type symptoms.

Each of the oils is appropriate for different people at different times – some people will benefit from starting the day with an upper, some people will wake up anxious and need a grounder instead.
